Since your child arrived, you have mostly been parents. Conversations revolve around sleep, nursery and shopping, and closeness and sex hardly come up any more. In couples therapy we look at what has happened between you and what the two of you need as a couple.

Two tired people

In the evening you sit side by side and talk about the next day. Who gets up at night, who stays home, who remembers the paediatrician appointment? Small things are enough to start a fight. Underneath there is often the feeling of being left alone with it all, or of never getting it right.

Many couples say: we work well as a team. But as a couple, we’ve disappeared.

What changes

A child changes a relationship from the ground up. Roles shift, often without anyone wanting it, into old patterns. Your own body feels different. Desire may come back sooner for one of you than for the other.

If things grind during this time, it doesn’t mean your relationship is broken. Crises arise where closeness, needs and dynamics change. After a birth, almost everything changes at once.

How I work

We look at what lies beneath the arguments. Which needs have been neglected since the birth? What do you keep from each other so as not to add to the other person’s load?

Sexuality has a place too, if you want it to: what was sex like before, what is it like now, and what does each of you wish for? You can read more in the guide Sex after birth. If pain during sex persists, please have it checked by a doctor.

I work in a body-oriented, emotion-focused and systemic way. More about this under Couples therapy.

The best way to find out whether my work suits you is to talk. If you like, we can talk on the phone for 15 minutes first, free of charge.

Process and fees

A couples session lasts 90 minutes at the practice and 60 minutes online. If childcare is hard to arrange, we can meet online, for example while the baby is asleep. The initial session is already our first real session. How long we work together is something we discuss together.

Questions about couples therapy after the first baby

“Is it normal that we argue so much?”

Many couples argue more in the first year with a child than ever before. But normal doesn’t mean you have to put up with it. You are welcome to get support early on.

“We hardly have any time. Is it worth it?”

Many couples come every two to four weeks. Online, you don’t have to travel across town. Whether the rhythm suits you is something we decide together.

An hour just for the two of you.

A sentence or two is enough. I usually reply within 24 hours and suggest a time for an initial session.
