If you want to help a woman orgasm, what you need most is slowness and asking. Arousal builds in stages, and each stage calls for a different kind of touch. The six stages below show how you can accompany your partner, without pressure and without an orgasm having to happen at the end.
The model goes back to the sex researchers Masters and Johnson. They described four phases: excitement, plateau, orgasm and resolution. Here I break it down more finely.
First things first: many women don’t have an orgasm every time they have sex, and that is normal. The stages aren’t a programme to be worked through. Your partner has a say: ask her beforehand what she likes, and stop at once if she wants you to.
The 6 stages of female arousal
1. Setting the mood
Before any direct stimulation, it is about arriving.
- Gentle touch: light stroking, almost floating above the skin, can wake the senses.
- Kisses on sensitive places: throat, the back of the neck, face, the inner thighs.
Take your time. Think of building arousal like a Jenga tower: too much speed easily brings it down.
Tip: deliberately leave out the vulva and nipples in this stage. Many women find direct contact there too intense while there isn’t enough arousal yet.
2. Warming up
Now arousal can grow, and you slowly move closer to the vulva.
- Gently include the vulva, without direct stimulation or penetration.
- Stroke gently over the clitoral hood from top to bottom, not from bottom to top.
- Instead of going straight to the clitoris, touch the skin around it and the vulval lips.
Let desire grow without already pushing towards climax.
3. Building pleasure
In this stage the clitoris can be included more deliberately, through the hood. Try circling, gentle up-and-down strokes or sideways movements.
Stay steady for a while, for example 10 to 15 movements near the clitoris. Then pause briefly and start again. This is where anticipation grows. The orgasm doesn’t have to come yet.
4. Plateau
Now staying power is needed. Try not to change speed or pressure. If you do, increase only very slightly. Interruptions or abrupt changes can quickly make arousal drop again in this stage.
Ask instead: “More pressure?”, “Faster?” or “Just like that?”
5. Orgasm
Some women like calmer, holding touch during orgasm. Others want the movement to carry on exactly as it was. What feels good to your partner at the moment of climax is best discussed beforehand.
6. Winding down or another round
Don’t stop abruptly unless your partner wants you to. Afterwards there is time to cuddle, to wind down slowly or, if you both want to, for another round.

How to make a woman orgasm: where to start
An orgasm isn’t a must. It is an invitation.
Don’t try all the stages at once. Start with the first and ask your partner afterwards how it was for her.
If she doesn’t come, that is just as much part of it. Why many women come mainly through the clitoris, I explain in the article Female orgasm: why the kind of touch matters. If pressure is involved, read how you can take the pressure off your partner.
If pressure or frustration around desire and orgasm has built up between you, you can look at it together in sex therapy.
Desire without pressure.
